First of all, it feels like we've been dating for 10 years, but I guess a global pandemic will do that to you. We met through Tinder, we moved in together after 6 months, and we both use very obscure American references. So pretty solid foundations.
Our first date was something a pre-teen would dream of; a movie and a coconut. Was it a rom-com? Nope. It was a film based on the events at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic games bombing at Centennial Park.
Conversation was effortless, Sunny laughed at the right times, and we got on really well. Honestly speaking I don't think either of us felt 'a spark' but we knew we'd like to see each other again. So we did. Dating apps were deleted a couple of months later.
Our next big milestone was moving in together in July 2020. A key driver behind this decision was saving money on rent, but also love, but mainly rent. They say a true test of a relationship is the first holiday together, which pales into insignificance once you've been living together for almost two years.
The plan was to go to Europe for a couple of weeks and finally break free from the 'staycation' shackles of Hong Kong. We touched down in Greece and spent the best part of a week with my family in a lovely villa. Sunny had been privy to the Voyce family's Sunday evening quizzes and virtual games of Trivial Pursuit in the height of the pandemic, so she was already on firm ground. They loved her. After a drunken night and a heated conversation about the state of British politics, naturally I popped the question. I've overlooked a lot of important information, but I'm sure the full version of this story will be mentioned at the wedding. Let's just say there was a proposal and one of us was wearing pants.
We then carbo-loaded our way round Italy stopping in Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, and Como. I took the ring back off Sunny in Rome and told her I would do something a little bit more romantic and memorable. On the penultimate day of our holiday I awkwardly asked Sunny to marry me at Villa del Balbianello in Lake Como. It was awkward because Sunny isn't a massive fan of PDA's and this garnered a bit of attention, plus I forgot say anything. Sunny later admitted that she had completely forgotten she gave the ring back and seemed genuinely surprised this was happening.
And here we are today.
